Burning Man WhatWhereWhen

Burning Man: WhatWhereWhen

Arriving at Burning Man can be an overwhelming event, so when you reach the entrance you are greeted with a guide book called WhatWhereWhen that details the activities, events, and different gatherings happening in the city that week. When approaching the design for the front cover I wanted to create something meaningful that related to the yearly theme, while also being something that is agnostic enough for participants to create their own interpretation. It is one of the few pieces of ephemera from the event, so crafting a design helps capture the spirit of Burning Man and the art on display is a really important consideration.

2017 Radical Ritual

The theme for the 2017 event explored the rituals and ceremonies and intention driven actions of our lives. For inspiration I looked through many types of religious art and texts, as well as important buildings, structures, and shrines for a variety of cultures and time periods. It was important to me to not represent one modality or idea, but instead nod to a broader tradition and cultivate an atmosphere where views can inject their own meaning.

2018 WhatWhereWhen

The theme of the classic Isaac Asimov novel was chosen to explore the concepts around where humans and technology beings, and how the interplay of those two things increasingly define the world we live. I love the artwork of older science fiction novels and movies, and looked to visual direction of the classic film 2001: A Space Odyssey as a place to draw inspiration. Contrasting the hardline, cold feel of technology with the warm, more illustrative anatomical drawings gave me a striking visual for participants to ponder. I also included a memorial to Larry Harvey, the founder of Burning Man who had passed away earlier in the year.
